In my book The Book Thief; Liesel lives in Germany and is apart of the Band of German Girls. Some events that took place in the book that would compare to real-life historical events would be Book Burning. From the site of ushmm.org it says: The burning of books under the Nazi regime on May 10, 1933, is perhaps the most famous book burning in history. The May 1933 book burning in Nazi Germany had a precedent in nineteenth century Germany. In 1817, German student associations (Burschenschaften) chose the 300th anniversary of Luther’s 95 Theses to hold a festival at the Wartburg, a castle in Thuringia where Luther had sought sanctuary after his excommunication. The students, demonstrating for a unified country—Germany was then a patchwork of states—burned anti-national and reactionary texts and literature which the students viewed as “Un-German.” Most of the Germans who went to the Book Burning’s supported the Nazi Party; while in The Book Thief Liesel starts to realize that the book burning is wrong and she will slowly start to move away from Hitler and the Nazi party in the remainder of the book. In the book also Liesel, Rosa, and Hans hid a jewish man. The site ushmm.org had a article stating: Parents, children, and rescuers faced daunting challenges once the decision was made to go into hiding. Some children could pass as non-Jews and live openly. Those who could not had to live clandestinely, often in attics or cellars. Children posing as Christians had to carefully conceal their Jewish identity from inquisitive neighbors, classmates, informers, blackmailers, and the police. Even a momentary lapse in language or behavior could expose the child, and the rescuer, to danger. This was so Jewish Citizens could hide from having to go to a Ghetto or Camp.

Right now I am reading the book: The Book Thief; By: Markus Zusak. I am connecting the Book to the Conflict of the Holocaust. In a Article I found by the History Channel I learned that: The word “Holocaust,” from the Greek words “holos” (whole) and “kaustos” (burned), was historically used to describe a sacrificial offering burned on an altar. Since 1945, the word has taken on a new and horrible meaning: the mass murder of some 6 million European Jews (as well as members of some other persecuted groups, such as Gypsies) by the German Nazi regime during the Second World War. To the anti-Semitic Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, Jews were an inferior race, an alien threat to German racial purity and community. After years of Nazi rule in Germany, during which Jews were consistently persecuted, Hitler’s “final solution”–now known as the Holocaust–came to fruition under the cover of world war, with mass killing centers constructed in the concentration camps of occupied Poland. In the Book Thief it is based on Himmel Street in the town of Molching, Germany. The main character; Liesel Meminger is a German foster child; her mother left her to Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann. Her brother died on the train ride to Molching. It reminds me of the fates of Jewish and non-Jewish children and how they died during WWII: 1) children killed when they arrived in killing centers 2) children killed immediately after birth or in institutions 3) children born in ghettos and camps who survived because prisoners hid them 4) children, usually over age 12, who were used as laborers and as subjects of medical experiments 5) children killed during reprisal operations or so-called anti-partisan operations That is all I have gotten to so far; and I hope to update this soon whenever I am close to finishing the book.
